Camellia Cup Regatta Report

All J Class photo courtesy of John Poimiroo

Regatta Report  by Gene Novak

This two-day regatta is sailed in conjunction with the Folsom Lake Yacht Club, in Folsom, CA.  While the full-size boats are sailing on the main body of the lake the Sacramento and Elk Grove Model Yacht Clubs hold our own event from Hobie Cove near the marina offices.  Saturday racing is for the J Class and this year we had 6 boats at the event with winds in the 6-8 knot range.  Electrical gremlins and gear failures before racing started caused 3 boats to DNS.

There was spirited racing for the other 3 boats and a total of 10 races were completed.  Gene Novak had his new Svea out for it’s first sail, but electrical issues kept it from racing.  He had arranged for Marty Lawson to sail his tried and true Ranger and Marty represented himself well with 9 first place finishes followed by John Heinrich in 2nd place and Dan Robinson in 3rd.
